Emsella: Sit. Strengthen. Stay Confident.

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles and tissue that support the bladder, bowel, uterus, and other pelvic organs. When these tissues weaken as a result of childbirth or the ageing process, Kegel strengthening exercises may be in order. As your wellness clinic in Vancouver, British Columbia, o41 clinic also provides advanced treatments for persistent symptoms of pelvic floor disorder. Our medical professionals support your pelvic health and quality of life!

How do Kegel exercises work?

Kegel exercises are a way to strengthen your pelvic floor muscles. They involve a series of repetitive contractions and relaxation. Kegels are most commonly used to treat urinary incontinence or bladder leakage. You may have stress incontinence or leaks when laughing, sneezing, or lifting objects. Or, you may have urge incontinence, which is an intense and involuntary loss of bladder control that comes on suddenly and without warning. Some of our patients experience both stress and urge incontinence (mixed incontinence). By strengthening the muscles, Kegels support improvements in other symptoms, too, including:

  • Frequent urinary tract infections
  • Fecal incontinence
  • Constipation
  • Straining
  • Pelvic pain
  • Lower back pain
  • Prolapse (pressure that arises when organs like the bladder drop from their normal positions)
  • Pain during sex

What if Kegels don’t work?

It’s estimated that 30% of women do not see improvements with Kegel exercises alone. They may be challenged to engage the right muscles. When Kegels and other interventions have not been effective, we may explore alternative options such as Emsella. This treatment can be a good option for individuals with persistent pelvic symptoms, because it generates much higher intensity contractions than what can be achieved with Kegel exercises.

How does Emsella work?

Emsella uses high-intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) technology. While this sounds like a mouthful, it simply refers to delivering thousands of intense muscle contractions to stimulate the entire pelvic floor. This process strengthens weak muscles and restores neuromuscular control efficiently.

What can I expect during treatment?

Emsella is not invasive and very discreet. You simply sit on a special chair as electromagnetic energy is delivered to the area. You remain fully clothed throughout treatment. The process can be completed in 30 minutes. Treatment is also very gentle, with most of our patients describing a light tingling sensation and contractions. It’s so gentle, in fact, that you can get back to work and other activities right away.

What can I expect after treatment?

You may notice improvements in the severity and frequency of “accidents” and other symptoms after just one treatment. However, treatment typically involves a series of six sessions scheduled twice each week. These sessions support optimal results.

Is Emsella just for women?

Absolutely not! Men can also experience symptoms stemming from weak or damaged pelvic floor muscles. Our male patients may benefit from Kegel exercises as well as Emsella.
